BOB’S PRACTICAL GUIDES
Limescale Care for Taps and Showerheads
Hard-water deposits need a product and method compatible with the fitting. Check the manufacturer’s care advice before using an acid, abrasive or prolonged soak.
Identify the finish first
A white deposit around a tap may be limescale, but the suitable treatment depends on the metal, coating and surrounding surface. Natural stone, plated fittings and painted areas can be damaged by products that work on another material. Check the fitting and surface care instructions before choosing a descaler.
Do not assume that vinegar, lemon juice or another household acid is safe because it is familiar. A prolonged soak can affect some finishes and seals. Use only a compatible product, follow its label and stop if the surface changes or the instructions do not cover the material.
Work within the product instructions
Keep the room appropriately ventilated and protect nearby surfaces as instructed. Do not mix descalers with bleach or other cleaning chemicals. Avoid abrasive tools and do not exceed the stated contact time in an attempt to remove a heavier deposit faster.
A removable showerhead may have its own cleaning instructions, while an integrated fitting may need a different approach. Do not force a seized component apart. If the fitting leaks or the coating is already damaged, record the issue and seek the appropriate repair rather than treating it as a stubborn cleaning task.
Know when to stop
Some marks remain because the finish is etched, worn or corroded. Cleaning cannot replace that material. Ask about the difference between removable deposits and permanent damage before repeated treatment makes the appearance worse.
For a wider bathroom brief, describe the affected fittings when enquiring about one-off cleaning. For a rental handover, list them within the end of tenancy scope and keep any existing damage separate from cleaning expectations.
Planning the next step
Discuss one off cleaning using the actual rooms or items, their condition and the access arrangements. Confirm the scope and total before booking.
